Yahoo! Answers - Have You Noticed Sponsored Advertising?

February 28th, 2007 by Brandon

We’ve received a lot of feedback on the recent questions our sponsors have posted and we’d like to address some of your concerns. The purpose of Yahoo! Answers is to create a community where people can come together to help one another and to share knowledge. It is a marketplace of ideas, knowledge, and experience from around the world, brought to you at no cost.

More information is available on the Yahoo! Answers blog

I don’t see any reason to make a fuss about it, Yahoo! needs to pay the bills just
as we all do.

Yahoo Mail integrates IM

February 28th, 2007 by Brandon

Beginning Monday, some Yahoo Mail users will be able to chat in real time through their e-mail program. Yahoo said in November that it would embed instant-messaging technology directly into its Yahoo Mail program so that users wouldn’t have to open up–or even install–Yahoo Messenger or another IM ,service to chat with each other online.

Read more about it here

This should be an interesting venture, perhaps they are doing this to not only compete with google, but perhaps with the likes of meebo and other web driven instant messengers?

Yahoo! Messenger - Chat Room Join Delay

February 27th, 2007 by Brandon

For the past month or so, I have noticed an increase in wait time between trying to join a room and actually joining the room. Sometimes, it will just stall out completely. Other times it will take about 5 minutes and then I can finally joining a room.

I am attributing this to perhaps server load? I think Yahoo! should purchase some new servers to help take down this loading time. It has gotten so bad that six times out of ten I actually can not get into the room I wish to join.

From an end user perspective this is quite frustrating, but I also can understand that things happen. So Yahoo! what do you say? Fix the load time, pretty please!

Yahoo! Messenger Hack - Multiple Instances

February 27th, 2007 by Brandon

Do you have more than one Yahoo! screen name? Do you want to be able to talk to multiple people on your different names at the same time? Well thanks to Yahoo! upgrading a lot of their framework this can be achieved simply by changing a registry entry.

The registry hacks are available for download at the bottom of this post. There is one to enable multiple instances, and there is one to uninstall it. You must have your Yahoo! Messenger closed out before running either one of these hacks.

Also for those that *are* a little more computer literate, it appears that you can’t run multiple instances of Yahoo! Messenger by calling the ymsgr: command in the Start > Run menu. But for most of you this wont matter, simply click on your Yahoo! Messenger Icon to run multiple instances of the program.

Turn ON multiple instances.

Turn OFF multiple instances.

As always for any registry hack, just right click and select save target as. Once the file is downloaded double click on it to install.

Yahoo! Messenger - Share Music File

February 27th, 2007 by Brandon

I was just taking the new Yahoo! Messenger 8.1  around for a spin and I came across this little Menu called Share Music File.

Yahoo! Share Music Through IM

From what I can tell you have to call the computer in order to share music with another user. But I thought this was rather clever and easy to use new feature, hats off to the Yahoo! Messenger Team.

I remember during the earlier days of IM, before Yahoo! Messenger was really used we would have to use an AIM p2p program to share our music. Problem being most of the programs back then were kind of clunky
and the file sizes were way to big to do a send file.
Great new feature, keep them coming!

Now Yahoo! if you would only bring back user created chats I would be very happy!

Yahoo! Messenger Hack - Tabbed IMS

February 27th, 2007 by Brandon

Do you love using Yahoo! Messenger but miss having tabbed ims? I know I did, thats why I made Super Y! for Yahoo! Messenger 6 and under. I am very pleased to announce that Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 now has tabbed IM’s built in. However you can not use it without a Registry Hack.

Having said that, why not turn them on? You can do this on Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 by downloading the following registry file (right click save target as, then double click to install.) This new Yahoo! Messenger hack comes straight from the Yahoo! Messenger Team. It is however not without bugs.

Keep in mind this is a hack for Yahoo! Messenger that has not been exhaustively tested. I did experience some display issues with my IM windows initially, but a click and drag of the bottom right corner of my IM window corrected it.

You can however download a seperate utility from WackyB to fix most of these issues.
