Yahoo today launched a web-based version of its free instant messaging service that lets people use Yahoo Messenger on any browser and any Internet-connected computer rather than having to download it to a hard drive.People can now check their instant messages and access their buddy list from anywhere, which could prove useful for travellers, workers whose employers block software downloads to company machines, cyber-cafe dwellers and people who simply cannot afford their own computers.

Yahoo senior vice president of communications Brad Garlinghouse spoke on this product update: “This really has great implications for the road warriors out there who are on the go. People have become quite accustomed to a non-stop accessible life.”

By dispensing with the need to install and run instant messenger client program, Yahoo is looking to reach out to tens of millions of consumers around the world who use the Web outside their personal computers.

“The internet is evolving from a static experience where a web page is just a web page to where Web pages behave more like traditional desktop computer applications,” Mr Garlinghouse said.

With this development, Yahoo now joins rivals Google and Microsoft who already have Web-based versions of their instant-message applications with Gmail, which launched in 2004, and MSN Web Messenger, respectively.

The Yahoo Web-based IM version offers functions that the downloaded version does not. The new version has an archive feature that allows a user to search back to find all previous conversations with any of their IM contacts. Another feature likely to impress heavy users is the ability to maintain multiple conversations in one window with different tabs instead of opening up chats in multiple windows.

Yahoo Messenger for the web is available online at http://webmessenger.yahoo.com.
