Yahoo! CAPTCHA Cracked

January 30th, 2008 by Brandon

A group of russian hackers/crackers have released a new way to crack the captcha that Yahoo! uses in everything, chat, mail, registration. So everyone get ready to see a large surge of porn bots in the chat rooms. Yahoo! why not use the spam filter idea I talked about previously? You guys must have the resources to put it in place. Granted the captcha method did reduce the number of bots, but it certainly didn’t solve the problem like they had stated or we all hoped for.

Yahoo! Web Messenger to get Webcam?

November 2nd, 2007 by Brandon

Yahoo! just recently held a Hack day for Yahoo! Messenger which produced a few cool new little toys (hopefully we will get to use them.) They had a few good hacks created that day one of those hacks being an internal translation tool for IM’s. I love that idea, incorporate it into the new messenger while you are at it pleaaaaaase! Another one and I think this is a great one as well, was the Webcam hack.

Yahoo! Chat Exploit

October 25th, 2007 by Brandon

It has come to my attention that there is a new Yahoo! Chat exploit in the wild, this exploit consists of injecting YMSG protocol bits into the location section of a yahoo profile. There are a few variations currently circulating, one which would add an aditional name to the room, and another that would remove the chat text completely.

Yahoo! has been notified, and I would expect a patch soon (within 72 hours)

Privacy Concerns: Discovring new friends

September 13th, 2007 by Brandon

This just in from Yahoo Messenger’s blog:

At a recent Hack Day, a team of four Yahoos built and presented “Discovr”, a hack that would enable users to find new friends on Yahoo! Messenger by seeing who their IM contacts have on their list. A “friends of friends” concept. Discovr was created by Yahoos Ashwinder Ahluwalia, Vinay Kakade, Pras Sarkar and Ramana Yerneni.

They showed me a web-based prototype of this “friend-finder”. Here’s how it worked: After typing in my Yahoo! ID, I saw a list of other Yahoo! IDs that appear on my IM friends’ friends list. Sort of like peeking into my friend’s contact lists, except that I don’t know which friend belongs to whom; it’s just an aggregate look at the universe of my friends’ contacts. There was also relevancy rankings so I could get a feel for which of these new potential friends is the most connected in my IM community. If a Yahoo! ID appears on the contact lists of 12 of my friends, it ranks highly; if it only appears on a few, the score is lower.

This product would obviously raise certain privacy concerns and will most likely not become a reality.

Remember, this is just a concept from Hack Day and though team Discovr built a compelling prototype, it’s not something you’ll see in Yahoo! Messenger in the near future.

Here is a screenshot from the Hack Day web app:

Take your Yahoo! Messenger Avatar with you

March 6th, 2007 by Brandon

It’s great fun to change the clothes, backgrounds and accessories on your Avatar. But when you sign out of Messenger, that’s the end of your Avatar until next time, right? Nope! You can display your Avatar on a personal web page, blog or even MySpace page using the handy export tools on the Avatars site.

More information is available on the Yahoo! Messenger Blog and even further indepth directions are available at WackyB

Yahoo! Messenger Use Log Files - Hack

March 1st, 2007 by Brandon

The following registry hack will create a new folder in your Yahoo! Messenger Install Directory (the default is C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger) the new folder will be Logs.

This will basically log everything that Yahoo! Messenger is doing.
It is really informative and probably wont be of any use to the average user. But for those that are paranoid or just like messing about with programs and such. The install for the register hack is at the bottom of the post.  There is one to enable it and one to disable it.

Enable Log Files

Yahoo! Messenger Hack - Multiple Instances

February 27th, 2007 by Brandon

Do you have more than one Yahoo! screen name? Do you want to be able to talk to multiple people on your different names at the same time? Well thanks to Yahoo! upgrading a lot of their framework this can be achieved simply by changing a registry entry.

The registry hacks are available for download at the bottom of this post. There is one to enable multiple instances, and there is one to uninstall it. You must have your Yahoo! Messenger closed out before running either one of these hacks.

Also for those that *are* a little more computer literate, it appears that you can’t run multiple instances of Yahoo! Messenger by calling the ymsgr: command in the Start > Run menu. But for most of you this wont matter, simply click on your Yahoo! Messenger Icon to run multiple instances of the program.

Turn ON multiple instances.

Turn OFF multiple instances.

As always for any registry hack, just right click and select save target as. Once the file is downloaded double click on it to install.
